How to descale a Sage Barista Express (and keep it running perfectly)

Espresso shot extracting from the group head of a professional espresso machine

Limescale builds up inside every espresso machine, especially in hard water areas. Descaling your Sage Barista Express, Brushed Stainless Steel regularly keeps it heating properly, protects the internals and keeps your coffee tasting clean. Here’s how to do it.

How often should you descale?

Every two to three months is typical, or whenever the descale light comes on. In hard water areas you may need to descale more often. Using a water filter reduces how often you need to do it.

What you’ll need

  • Sage descaling powder or a descaler suitable for espresso machines
  • Fresh water
  • A large container to catch water
  • A replacement water filter, such as the Sage Claro Swiss Water Filter

Step-by-step: descaling the Barista Express

  • Remove the water filter from the tank and empty the drip tray.
  • Dissolve the descaler in water and pour it into the tank, following the pack instructions.
  • Turn the machine off. Press and hold the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons together, then press power to enter descale mode (check your manual, as steps vary slightly by model).
  • Place a container under the group head and steam wand.
  • Open the steam dial and run the descale cycle, alternating between the group and the steam wand until the tank is empty.
  • Rinse the tank thoroughly, refill with fresh water and repeat the cycle to flush the machine.
  • Refit a fresh water filter and you’re ready to brew.

Your everyday cleaning routine

  • Purge and wipe the steam wand after every use.
  • Rinse the portafilter and basket after each shot.
  • Empty the drip tray daily.
  • Backflush with a cleaning tablet every few weeks.
  • Clean the grinder burrs every month or so.

Why it matters

Scale reduces heating efficiency, can block small pipes and affects flavour. A clean machine makes better coffee and lasts far longer. The same principles apply to the Sage Barista Pro, Brushed Stainless Steel, Sage Barista Touch, Brushed Stainless Steel and Sage Bambino Plus, Brushed Stainless Steel.

Backflushing the Barista Express

  • Insert the silicone cleaning disc into the single-wall filter basket.
  • Add a cleaning tablet and lock in the portafilter.
  • Run the cleaning cycle (check your manual for the button combination).
  • Remove, rinse and run a few shots of water through to clean.

Cleaning the grinder

Remove the hopper, take out the upper burr and brush away old coffee and oils. Use grinder cleaning tablets occasionally. Never use water on the burrs. A clean grinder gives more consistent doses and better flavour.

Changing the water filter

Soak a new filter for five minutes, set the date dial for two months ahead and fit it in the tank holder. The Sage Claro Swiss Water Filter fits most Sage espresso machines.

Signs your machine needs attention

  • Shots pull slowly even at a coarser grind.
  • Weak or spluttering steam.
  • Lower brewing temperature or lukewarm coffee.
  • White deposits around the group head or in the drip tray.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use vinegar to descale a Sage machine?

It’s not recommended. Vinegar can damage seals and leave a taste. Use a descaler designed for espresso machines.

Why is my Sage descale light still on?

Make sure you’ve completed the full cycle, including the rinse. If it persists, check your manual for the reset sequence.
